Official Process Guide

The Royal Thai Police Clearance Certificate

Obtaining a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from Thailand—officially known as the "Criminal Record Check"—is a mandatory step for individuals who have resided in the Kingdom for more than six months and are now seeking visas for countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, UK, or New Zealand. The process is centralized at the Police Special Branch in Bangkok. Unlike many Western countries where checks are name-based and digital, Thailand strictly requires inked fingerprints for identity verification against the national criminal database. This physical requirement creates significant logistical challenges for applicants residing overseas. Our guide below details every nuance of the application, from the specific weight of paper required for fingerprint cards to the exact phrasing needed in cover letters for different embassies.

Who Needs This Certificate?

You typically require this document if: 1. **Visa Applicants:** You are applying for a K-1/CR-1 visa (USA), IEC Work Permit (Canada), or Subclass 189/190 (Australia). 2. **Teachers:** You are renewing your teaching license with the Teachers Council of Thailand (Khurusapha). 3. **Adoption:** You are in the process of adopting a child internationally. 4. **Citizenship:** You are applying for naturalization in a third country. *Note: If you were in Thailand on a Tourist Visa for less than 6 months, you may not need this. Check with your immigration lawyer.*

The Science of Fingerprinting

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is extremely strict about fingerprint quality. - **Form Format:** We recommend the FBI FD-258 standard card, but the RTP also accepts their own form. - **Rolled vs. Flat:** You must provide "Rolled" impressions (nail-to-nail) for all 10 fingers, plus "Flat" impressions for thumbs and four fingers. - **Common Errors:** Smudging due to sweaty hands, too much ink (ridges filled), or too little ink (faint ridges). - **Official Witness:** If you are abroad, the prints MUST be taken by a police officer, notary public, or official agency. Self-prints are instantly rejected.

Required Documents (The Checklist)

**For Foreigners:** - 2 Sets of Original Fingerprint Cards (Official Seal required). - Copy of current Passport (Bio page) - Signed & Certified. - Copy of Thai Visa/Entry Stamps (proving history of residence). - Copy of old Passport (if you used a different one in Thailand). - 2 Photographs (1.5 or 2 inches, formal attire, white background). - Cover Letter requesting the check (stating purpose). **For Thai Nationals:** - Copy of Thai ID Card (Bat Prachachon). - Copy of House Registration (Tabien Baan). - Copy of Passport. - Evidence of Military Service (males only - Sor Dor 8/9/43). - Name Change Certificates (if applicable).

Country-Specific Requirements

Different embassies have different validation rules. We tailor your application package to match these nuances.

🇺🇸USA

USCIS requires the certificate to cover the entire period of residence. Name checks must match the passport exactly. For K-1 visas, the certificate is valid for 1 year.

🇨🇦Canada

IRCC (Immigration Canada) is strict about the 'Chain of Custody'. They prefer the PCC to be sent directly to you, and then you upload a color scan. Ensure the scan is 600dpi.

🇦🇺Australia

The Department of Home Affairs often requires the document to be translated by a NAATI translator if there are any Thai stamps on it (though the PCC itself is usually English). We provide NAATI services.

🇨🇳China

Requires 'Triple Authentication' (Notary -> MFA -> Chinese Embassy). The PCC alone is useless in China without the Embassy sticker.

🇬🇧UK

UKVI accepts the standard English certificate. However, for teachers moving to the UK, an 'Enhanced' check might be requested, which Thailand does not strictly offer, but the standard PCC usually suffices.

Warning: Unspent Convictions

Thailand does not have a formal "spent conviction" scheme like the UK. Records from 20 years ago may still appear. If you have a prior conviction, please consult our legal team before applying to strategize your explanation to the embassy.
